Food High In Antioxidant

Most people think of 'supplements', ignoring foods high in antioxidants simply because it's easy just to 'pop a few pills' and maybe skip the the odd meal especially if you live a hectic and full lifestyle (like me) 'on the run' so to speak.

My advice is don't!

Yes... take supplements by all means but don't neglect food high in antioxidant. They can provide better insurance than supplements in as much as you are getting the antioxidants you need in the correct amount and form.

It's estimated that there are more than 4,000 compounds in foods that act as antioxidants. Listed below are some of the best and most studied foods high in antioxidant.

Vitamin C -A water soluble vitamin found in all body fluids, so possibly our first line of defense. Our bodies cannot manufacture vitamin C, neither can we store it too, so regular intake is very important.

This is not a problem if you eat fruits and vegetables (tut tut if you don't).

Here is a general list of food high in antioxidant, feel free to click on them as it will reveal much more information on the particular food.....

Vitamin E -A fat soluble vitamin and of all the antioxidants vitamin E shows the most promise at possibly preventing cardiovascular disease.

Also it can help with anti-aging to healing sunburn. It's not one of your 'miracle workers' but a very powerful antioxidant nevertheless. Rich sources include...

Beta Carotene- There has been over 600 different carotenoids discovered and this is probably the most studied of them all.

However it actually only represents less than 30 percent of the carotenoids in your blood. Research suggests that diets rich in carotenoids may protect against some cancers, cardiovascular disease and cataracts. Rich sources include....

Selenium - This is a mineral thought to help fight cell damage, ridding the body of destructive oxidation and helping to protect against

Caution....large doses of selenium through supplements can be toxic, so it's advisable to take selenium through foods such as.....

  • Fish
  • Shellfish
  • Red Meat
  • Grains
  • Eggs
  • Chicken
  • Garlic

Unexpected Foods High In Antioxidant

Recent studies have shown that unexpected foods such as beans, potatoes and artichokes were high on the antioxidant list. Small red beans contain more disease-fighting antioxidants than blueberries.

The Mediterranean's know what is good for them. Their diet is proving it can help prevent cancer. What is one of the main ingredients? Olive Oil. And what does Olive oil contain? Yes...it contains antioxidants.

Also.....

Sesame seed oil and sesame seeds

Pistachio Nuts.

Flaxseed (or Linseed) Oil

Surprisingly Maple Syrup Contains Antioxidants.

Spices too have a place in the 'antioxidant rich' league.

  • Cinnamon
  • Ginger
  • Ground cloves
