Ellagic Acid Found In Raspberries.....Could It Be A Breakthrough In Cancer Prevention?
Ellagic Acid.
Ellagic what?... I hear you say.
Well it's a natural compound found in high amounts in the leaves and seeds of pomegranates,
strawberries,
raspberries,
and other plant foods.
It provides plants with the natural defences they must have to fight off harmful chemicals in the environment and infectious bugs.
What does it do?
It is effective against numerous
cancer
causing chemicals and is is being hailed as a potential breakthrough in cancer preventention.
Ellagic-acid is a very powerful antioxidant that can bind to cancer-causing chemicals and neutralise them, renedering them harmless.
There are thousands of different chemicals involved with cancer development. One that we should be aware of is called casein kinase 2, otherwise known as CK2.
Why?
Because it is found in many tissues in your body and in normal circumstances is not a big threat. But, if it is activated, then your chances of developing cancer are very much increased. Worrying to say the least.
However, good news, no, great news......ellagic-acid has been found to completely block, yes, completely block the action of CK2....even when it has been activated. In fact, at present, ellagic-acid represents the most potent known CK2 inhibitor.
Healthy cells in our body have a normal life cycle of about 120 days before they die...and are then replaced by our body with healthy cells, and so on. It's a natural process called apoptosis (natural cell death). But cancer cells do not die, no, they just multiply instead.
Ellagic-acid to the rescue..it encourages apoptosis in the cancer cells...without damaging the healthy cells.
This is fantastic news, because, as we know, conventional cancer treatments, including chemotherapy, cause the death of not only the cancer cells but also the healthy cells insiscriminately too, which, in turn, screws up our poor old
immune system.
Have I finished? Not yet....there are more health benefits with ellagic acid.
Not only is it a great cancer fighter but it is also known to help slow down the process of
skin aging.
It is done by maintaining the elasticity of the skin by stopping the breakdown of skin fibres that naturally occurs with age.
Attention all you women going through the menopause....ellagic acid can be an effective alternative to HRT.
How? It regulates the levels of the hormone oestrogen. Because declining levels can cause all sorts of problems like hot flushes and a low sex drive to name a few.
How Much Do You Take?
Recommended dosage for ellagic acid is 1 gram tablet four times a day. This is equivalent of one cupful of fresh red raspberries a day (40mg of pure ellagic acid).
I must point out that if you take ellagic supplements they are not a treatment for cancer, they are only to be used as a preventative measure for the disease. So far it's ability to treat established cancer is unproven....
