Nov 19, 2008, Green Tea..Keeping Obesity At Bay

This will get you racing to the supermarket 'green tea' shelf.....

Three cups of green tea could help keep obesity at bay, scientists claim.

In fact, the tea is said to work even if junk food is still eaten!

How is this? Well, it cuts blood pressure and makes it easier for the body to process sugar.

We can thank Dr Lindsay Brown, a pharmacologist at Queensland University at Brisbane, Australia for these findings. She studied the effect of green tea on a group of rats.

They were fed a fat and sugar-laden diet, causing the fat around their bellies to actually double in size over eight weeks. Their blood pressure soared too.

Amazingly, when the tea was added to their junk-food diet, their waistlines and blood pressure returned to normal.

The tea that was used contained a blend of spearmint, grape-seed and olive oil...and is thought to work by stopping the fat cells from releasing inflammatory chemicals that attract more fat.

May 6, 2008, Natural Pigments Fight Cancer

Natural pigments in red, purple and blue fruit vegetables can have a dramatic effect in fighting cancer, research has shown.

The pigments are antioxidants called anthocyanins, which are easily absorbed through tissues in the stomach.

Experiments found that the colouring agents in food such as red grapes, elderberries and red cabbage can stop the growth of colon cancer cells and in some cases even destroy them.

An extract in purple maize was found to be particularly powerful in attacking cancerous cells.

In tests on human cells it killed 20 per cent of cancer cells while having little effect on healthy ones.

This research raises hopes that using naturally-based colourants instead of synthetic food dyes could lead to a dramatic enhancement in the health benefits of some foods.

Apr 19, 2008, Boosting Your Immune System

If you were to look at a sample of your blood under a microscope, you would see an enormous number of red blood cells whose job is to carry oxygen to your body tissues.

Here and there among them are white blood cells of various kinds, and they are the key soldiers that make up your immune system.

When abnormal cells arise in the body, it is white blood cells’ job to recognize and eliminate them. Some white blood cells are able to engulf and destroy abnormal cells (including cancer cells) as well as viruses, bacteria, and other invaders.

Other white blood cells facilitate this process in various ways, for example, by producing antibodies, protein molecules that attach to foreign or abnormal cells and flag them for destruction.

The immune system is critically important in fighting cancer. Individual cancer cells can arise in all of us from time to time.

Cancer cells can also break free from an existing tumor and spread to other parts of the body. If your immune system is vigilant, it recognizes and destroys cancer cells before they can take hold. So strengthening the immune system is a key strategy in cancer prevention and survival.

Apr 16, 2008, Boost Your Brain!

The human brain...possibly the most important organ in the body.

How wonderful are our brains? Here are some 'brain' facts....

  • More electrical impulses are generated in one day by a single human brain than by all the telephones in the world
  • It is estimated that on an average day the human brain produces 70,000 thoughts
  • Women's brains are smaller than men's brains by an average of about 12 per cent
  • The average adult human brain weighs three pounds and uses 20 per cent of the body's oxygen
  • Abused children have smaller brains. Parts of the brain of a severely abused and neglected child can be substantially smaller than that of a healthy child
  • Babies lose half their neurons at birth. It is estimated that a baby loses about half their neurons before they are born. This process is sometimes referred to as pruning and may eliminate neurons that do not receive sufficient input from other neurons
  • Baby talk increases vocabulary. A study showed that when mothers frequently spoke to their infants, their children learned about 300 more words by age two thandid children whose mothers rarely spoke to them
  • Birdsong and human speech have similar characteristics. Like humans, birds learn their complex vocalisations early in life and imitate their adult counterparts to acquire these skills. These two species have evolved a complex hierarchy of specialized forebrain areas where motor and auditoryareas interact continuously in order to produce detailed vocalisations

Dosen't it make sense to ensure our brains are kept in 'peak' condition? Click below to find out how....

Apr 12, 2008, Most Amazing Garlic Broccoli...Ever!

Ok, we all know just how healthy garlic and broccoli are...well here is the best ever recipe combining the two. Try it.....

Ingredients

  • 1-2 florets of broccoli
  • 2-4 large cloves garlic
  • olive oil
  • salt (to taste)
  • pepper (to taste)

Directions:

Take a normal-sized pot and fill it with water. Place it on the stove and turn on the flames. Take your broccoli and cut it into smaller florets. When the water is steadily boiling, quickly drop the broccoli in. Let it boil for about 30 seconds, then turn off the heat. Leave the broccoli in the hot (but NOT boiling anymore) water for about 5 to10 minutes until it is almost cooked enough to eat but still a little crunchy. Make sure to push the tops of the broccoli in occasionally so it all cooks evenly. After it’s finished, drain the water out.

Place a large pan on the stove and put enough olive oil to thinly coat the bottom. Crush your garlic (I like a lot, but 2 should suffice if you're not as big of a fan). Place the crushed garlic into the oil and turn on the heat. Stir olive oil and garlic for about 2-3 minutes until the whole skillet is hot…then add the broccoli. Saute the broccoli for 3 to 5 minutes, then plate.

This way of cooking broccoli leaves it still a little crisp and not mushy. It makes a good side dish with pasta and the like.

Serves: 1-2

Preparation time: 15 - 20 minutes (give or take)

Enjoy!

Apr 11, 2008, Fight Colon Cancer With Apples...

According to the latest research findings, consuming apples and apple juice on a regular basis may play an important role in the prevention of colon cancer.

About 36,000 people are diagnosed with colorectal cancer in the UK each year (making it the third most common form of cancer) with the majority of cases occuring in people over the age of 50...so this very promising news and has got me stocking up my fridge with lots of pure apple juice!

A recent study in Germany researched human faecal matter incubated with apple pectin or polyphenol-rich apple juice extract.

During fermentation, both substances (with apple pectin having the greater effect) increased the production of a short chain fatty acid known as butyrate.

Now butyrate is a major contributor to healthy colon mucosa, which is also believed to have anti-carcinogenic effects on the colon.

Bottom line is that the researchers discovered the increased production of butyrate, via the addition of apple components, was able to inhibit the abnormal activity of which has been observed in several different types of cancer...including colon cancer.

The researchers final comments on the findings.."Pectin-rich apple products can thus be expected to exert anti-carcinogenic effects in the colon."

Apr 9, 2008, Why Are Antioxidants So Important?

Why antioxidants so important? Well, the simple answer is that the oxygen you breathe is slowly killing you.

Yes, the very oxygen we need to sustain life itself!

Free radicals are destroying your cells and the only thing out there that can slow them down is antioxidants.

So, what are free radicals? They are little molecules that steal the electrons from the atoms that compose you cells. Free radicals destabilize the atoms within the cells and cause a deadly chain reaction in that the atoms that are destabilized become free radicals themselves. This eventually destabilized the cell and causes it to become damaged.

Every second that you are alive two and a half million cells die. Quite staggering isn’t it? At the same time those very cells are being replicated. The negative is that instead of replicating a healthy version of themself, they are replicating the damaged version.

This is why we age and get diseases like heart disease and cancer. Antioxidants help slow the aging process and prevent these deadly diseases from taking over your body. Antioxidants lend their electrons to the free radicals but the molecular structure of an antioxidant is stable in either form. This means that the atoms that make up the antioxidants do not become free radicals and as a result they stop the deadly chain reaction.

For a lighthearted look at how free radicals and antioxidants work, click below....

Apr 7, 2008, Antioxidant Anti Aging Skin Care

It is not surprising that one of the largest markets in the world of health and beauty is anti-ageing skin care products.

Why is this? Well it is due primarily to the fact we are all living longer and want to continue looking younger as we age.

This is achieved in beauty products by promoting the growth of connective tissue using the protein collagen.

Now collagen is the most abundant in the skin of all animals. Did you know that twenty-five per cent of the skin's protein is collagen?

Collagen is a member of another family of substances that aid in reducing the signs of ageing....known as antioxidants. They are the body's method of slowing down the aging process.

Although the benefits of vitamin C (an antioxidant) are well documented, it is still debated as to what our daily amount should be.

Skin care treatments that are based on vitamin C, pose the problem of becoming oxidized themselves as they come into contact with air during their usage.

Manufacturers are trying alternative skin care treatments to vitamin C that do not have this oxidization problem or cost as much to produce.

These alternative products are not as effective as vitamin C but vitamin E and lipoic acid are anti-oxidants and are now being used.

Vitamin E is found in the blood and is an antioxidant that is also used to increase the body's defenses against other health problems; there is some evidence to show it helps prevent diseases including cancer.

Lipoic acid is also an energy making component of the body, found in every cell, it is also known to combat the signs of aging very effectively by repairing skin damage caused by the aging process.
