Plum Health Benefit A Potent Free Radical Fighter...Just Don't Peel Them!

Plum health benefit, they are a terribly under-rated food, yet so rich in antioxidants that they cannot be ignored.

plums, health benefit, antioxidants, free radicals

In fact scientists are heralding the plum as the new 'superfood'.

When they are are dried, they are known as Prunes.

They found that they match or exceed blueberries ..widely praised for their health benefits..in the level of antioxidants and other nutrients they contain. The reason they are high in antioxidants is due to their high content of unique phytonutrients called neochlorogenic and chlorogenic acid. These substances found in the plum and prune are classified as phenols(an antioxidant).

One plum contains about the same amount of antioxidants as a handful of blueberries.

Think about it for a moment...people tend to eat just a few blueberries at a time, perhaps on their cereal, maybe as an ingredient mixed with other fruit in a fruit salad. But, eat a whole plum, and the job's 'done', you get the full benefit. Great as a healthy easy quick snack as they are low in calories and fat free too! Very important tip..do not peel your plum..you must eat the skin because that is where many of the colour agents and antioxidants are.

The plum is quite unique due to the fact that there are so many varieties available. There are over 2,000 varieties of the fruit currently however over 100 are available in the United States alone.

They belong to the Prunus genus of plants and are relatives of the peach, nectarine and almond. They are all considered drupes, usually fruits having a single hard stone that encloses a seed.

Another interesting benefit of the plum and prune is its ability to increase absorption of iron into the body. So enabling them to make iron more available may be related to the vitamin C content of this fruit. They are a good source of Vitamin C.

So, if you are looking for a juicy, sweet tasting, potent free radical fighting fruit that comes in a plethora of colours, then look no further than the humble plum!
